English IV: Fl College Prep #1001405 Syllabus
                Mrs. Chandler

English IV: Fl College Prep course focuses on the Common Core Standards in reading, writing, speaking and listening, and language. This course is a pilot study devised by the Florida Department of Education to aid the gaps between high school and college entry level English.  It will include the essential skills and depth of knowledge that students need to apply to college and career tasks. The senior project will be a major facet to aid student success. It is divided into four major components: eight (8) –ten (10) page MLA research paper, project, portfolio, and presentation.  Students will demonstrate skills such as research, writing and editing, synthesizing and analyzing through reading comprehension, articulation within a real world application.

Goals: Success in the English IV: Fl College Prep course will provide entry into the first college English-credit level course who has mastered a CPT/PERT score of 83 in both reading and writing or ACT score of 18 and English score of 17, or a verbal SAT score of 440.  In addition, one must also pass the course with a C or better and pass the appropriate Basic Skills Exit Test at the end of the course.

Topics to be studied:
Reading: Timed reading, Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, Macbeth by Shakespeare, various British literature titles, American dramatic poetry, memoirs, speeches, satire, and visual literacy (ads, cartoons, etc.)
Writing: Critical analysis, compare and contrast, MLA research paper, college application essays, resume writing, scholarship essay, multi genre, formal business letter, argumentative paper, and narratives.
Speaking & listening: Daily participation is expected. I will be using the cold call method (no raised hands, I will randomly call on students), so you will need to be focused.  The senior project requires a formal presentation, Socratic circles, & web quest presentations.
Language: Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings. Utilize academic words and phrases in writing, speaking and listening.

Policies:  Absences are tied to course credit. Nine (9) absences (excused or unexcused) per semester are tolerated. The tenth (10th) absence is considered excessive and will be counted as unexcused unless official documentation is provided. It is the responsibility of the student to collect make-up work.  Two (2) days for each day of absence shall be given.  As Pirates, we exemplify Pirate Pride amongst and treat everyone with respect!
